The StylnMommy Holiday Dress Guide

If there’s ever a time to break out the heels and glitz its the holidays.  Its great to pair a fab top with some amazing jeans but there really is nothing like a dress when you want to spiff yourself up.  Here are some of my faves from this season:

via alicebytemperley.com $595 CDN

This Alice by Temperley dress has enough sparkle without making you look like you should be hanging off an xmas tree.  I love a rich navy dress too – its subtle, classy and can be worn year after year.

via wilfred.com $115

Silky, hot pink and simple.  Can be worn either as a tunic over leather leggings for a festive night of drinks on the town or with bare legs and heels, piling on the accessories.  Can be found at aritzia or the wilfred boutique.

via hm.com $388

If you were lucky enough to snag some of the Versace for H&M collection then maybe you already have this LBD in your dress arsenal.  I like anything black, leather and studded so this is basically the perfect little dress for moi. Unfortunately I didn’t manage to fight the crowds to get anything from this collection.  The conservative tailoring balances out the fact that its (pl)leather.

via tibi.com $462

Tibi is a great brand for dresses for any occasion.  In fact, I’m wearing one this weekend courtesy of Rent Frock Repeat  to a wedding that M and I are going to.  This black and white Roccoco print says holiday without smashing it over your head.  The back is low cut and sexy and the slightly unusual silhouette gives this dress some edge.

via bcbg.com $278

Speaking of being smashed over the head – if you’re looking to make an impact in a big way then you may as well go green, sparkly and short.  You won’t have any trouble finding a partner under the mistletoe since this dress will be luring em in as you walk/shimmer by.

via guess.com $78

I’m still into lace in a major way.  The little sleeves take this Guess dress from skank to swank.  Keep it chic with monochromatic accessories, an oversized clutch and some killer heels.

via bananarepublic.ca $89

It really isn’t a Holiday dress guide without some gold.  If you want to go for the gold but don’t want to stick out like a string of tinsel – maybe choose something like this from Banana Republic.   You can belt it but i’d leave it as is and go for a bit of a flapper vibe complete with bare face and red lips.

via shopbop.com $866

Here is the amped up version of the BR dress.  You’ve still got a subtle gold shimmery effect but its been done in true black swan style with a bustier and a full skirt.  Available at shopbop.com (which btw can ship to Canada in 3 days).  Its pricey but unforgettable.

via anthropologie.ca $388

For all the Audrey Hepburn types out there, head on over to Anthropologie where you can find this dress and many more like it.  The boatneck just screams for a huge statement necklace and if your feet are tired from all the heels-only events you’ve been racking up, this dress looks super cute with a pair of ballet flats.

via jacob.ca $79

Most of the time I look at Jacob as being somewhere you can reliably pick up some slacks for work. (though who really calls them slacks anymore?! I mean pants.)  However if you have a holiday party at work and changing into a sequin-encrusted gown seems like it just won’t fly, then maybe you could pick up a classic sweater dress.  Worn with opaque black tights and a blazer you can get away with wearing this during the day at work.  When its time to clock out you can breezily take off the blazer, slip on some heels, do a makeup refresher and you’re good to go.  They have this dress in red too but it felt a bit too elfy.

via freepeople.com $717

I’ve been on the search for a gorgeous long gown that isn’t a maxi and still gives the body some shape.  This Free People gown is super sexy while still being long.  It’s got the perfect combination of hard and soft with the metallic bustier top and the gauzy and light skirt.  You could rock these with some converse and you’d still be the belle of the ball.

Hopefully this gave some inspiration towards finding that perfect dress for the myriad of holiday events you’re sure to be attending this season.  Whether its a family brunch, New Years Eve party, holiday dinner with friends or a night out for drinks – this time of year is a major one for getting together and rehashing the year so why not do so while looking frocking great.

Currently Musing On: Wednesday Adams

I’ve been feeling Fall-ish lately.

I know – how is that even remotely possible with the blistering heat, BBQs and weekend swims?

Well as one who (for better or worse) likes to think ahead, Fall and its whispered promises of layers, boots and cardis has seduced me into dreaming about the perfect black dress.

I’ve totally been musing on Wednesday Adams and I can’t wait to find the perfect long sleeved, black and lacy mini dress.

Stripes & Dysons

oh how moody of me

Lack of cropping reveals a pink Dyson

Very overdue for some Stylin Second shots. Finally had the wherewithall to figure out how to use the self-timer on the cammie.

A casual day in the Toronto heat calls for pulling out a black/white stripey skirt from H&M, short sleeved black tone on tone stripe blouse by Free People and you’ll notice my constant companion – black hair tie.

And contrary to what it may seem, I’m not looking off into fashion-land distance – rather listening out for Baby H’s rustling from his nap.

Happy Friday!  Follow me on Twitter if you don’t already for some random musings @Stylin_Mommy

Summer Dress Guide

some of the dresses in rotation

Black boyshort-cut panties rejoice!  The thongs and crotchless panties *i kid!* of yesteryear have been relegated to the back of my undies drawer. Now its not because they are any less cute than before, its just that with the insane summer heat we have been having lately in Toronto, all I want to do is wear dresses.  I have always been a strong follower of the fashion meets function mentality and this has only increased since Baby H came along.  For ease, maximum style and minimal effort, you can’t beat a dress.

A few recent requests for advice on where to go for dresses got me thinking about what I look for in my dress wardrobe.

With all the dress shopping I’ve done in the past I’ve come to the conclusion that every girl needs a few to hold her over through the warmer months.

That being said, here is my guide to Summer Dress-ing:

The Everyday Dress Grocery shopping?  Running to the mall and want to look like you’ve had more than a few hours of measly sleep?  Grab this Go-To garment.  Cotton, light, long enough to cover your ass-ets when you bend over to load your shopping into the trunk or pick up baby’s paci.

Patios Watch Out For when you’re lunching with the girls or brunching with the in-laws…You want a cute and pretty something that’s light and easy on the eyes. Have a little fun and grab something flirty.

Weddings, Showers, Engagements, Oh My! You know you love your friends/fam, but with 10 weddings in a row this summer you want to scream…just a little. However, buck up, because with the lighter wallet comes the fun dresses!  Choose something fun in a bright colour that will stay classic for awhile…and mix and match simple dresses and fun accessories. Oh yeah..and no matter how tempting it is…stay away from white! A little respect for the bride never hurt anybody 😉

Pour Me A Stiff One!  For the lazy hazy nights out, get comfy but no need to lower the style factor.  Don a short and hot little number and show off the fact that (if you’re anything like moi) you’ve gotten a babysitter and shaved your legs 😉

Reco:

shopbop.com, dress by Torn

revolveclothing.com, dress by Backstage

Maxin’ and Relaxin’  Maxi dresses are always such a great idea.  I have a bunch but with an active kidlet, I find bending over and scooping him up not as easy wearing one of these – however, for those who are kid-free and/or more skilled than I, these are a great way to ‘maximize’ *har har* style as well as hide your gams if you haven’t had time to apply that self-tanning lotion.

Reco:

hm.com

freepeople.com

Basically you could throw a stick and hit a cute dress – there are just so many options out there and at all different price points.

Choose your dresses wisely and you can rework many of them so that they are interchangeable for different occasions.

Enjoy the fantastic heat wave!

Happy Mama’s Day

foxy lady

matching bowl cuts!

mama & I on my wedding day

My first Mother’s Day!  Its been such an unbelievable experience being a mom – as much as I thought I was prepared for it, nothing could really prep me for all the ups, downs and everything in between of having your first child!

Having Baby H has truly opened my eyes to what mother’s go through – the feeling of wanting to do anything and everything for your child and putting their happiness and health above everything else!

My mom has always been such a rock and a strong lady – she has always been a great role model for me.  But I have to say, I don’t think I really could appreciate what she has gone through til I had my own 🙂  Well, Mom, just a big thank you for everything you’ve done over the years, I really hope to be as great a mom to Baby H as you are to me!

And to all the Mamas out there – Happy Mday! May you all be showered with kisses 🙂

my baby & i! (baby wearing shirt by Old Navy, H&M jeans, Mexx shoes; mama wearing h&m leggings)
