Love, Actually

Every year around the holidays I pull out my absolute favourite rom-com and proceed to bask in 2 hours of unadulterated feel-goodness.
Why do I love Love Actually?
It’s just such a deliciously cozy movie with just the right balance of romance, familial love, heartbreak and humour.
I generally dislike films where there are a ton of characters (remember the disaster that was New Years Eve?) since I find the lack of screen time for any one character makes it harder to connect with them. But somehow the sharp writing and great acting make each storyline a fun and effortless ride in this classic. I’m especially partial to the storyline involving Liam Neeson and his son and Hugh grant plays the charming Englishman to a tee as always.

Also, how many of you The Walking Dead fans remember seeing Rick in this unforgettable scene where he (silently) professes his love for Keira Knightley?

Never fails to put a smile on my face and a tear in my eye!

Do you have an all time favourite feel-good flick?

Review: Seventh Generation

I was lucky enough to get to try some Seventh Generation products recently and thought I’d share my findings with you guys.
Before having kids I wasn’t overly concerned with what was in the detergent, soap or shampoo I used – as long as it got the job done I was happy enough to scour the sale racks for whatever.
Being a mom has totally changed this for me. As a family we’ve kind of made a natural progression towards more of an organic, toxin-free, “clean” lifestyle because we just want the best for our kids and short of moving to a farm we’re trying to adjust our lives accordingly.

I have to say I am impressed with the Seventh generation line. My favourites were the wipes – scent free but very moist and thick, excellent for handling massive baby poop explosions.
With kids that battle dry skin and excema, I don’t have to worry about rubbing their skin with fragrance or excess chemicals.
The same applies to the laundry detergent – love the freshness and the way the clothes turned out.
But the best for me was the lotion and shampoo – the use of olive oil really made them work well for dry skin.

I wasn’t the biggest fan of the diapers – a little too rough feeling. Also her lavender face soap had a bit too much of a scent for me.

But overall I loved the products and am definitely a convert to the detergent, dish soap and baby lotion and shampoo. I’d love to compare these to the Jessica Alba brand Honest Company.

How have you changed your lifestyle after having kids?

UK fave Next now Shipping to Canada! Review

There are many things this mama misses about her hometown of Newcastle, England. The walks down to the high street, the old cranky couple at the post office, fresh cream cakes.

But one major thing missing is the amazing SHOPS!  I’ve always had a special place in my heart for any British stores and Next is no exception.  I recently had the opportunity to try out the amazing shipping to Canada from one of my fave UK shops.

For those of you who don’t know (and really, where have you been?) Next carries a wide array of clothing and accessories for women, men and kids.  I was eager to give the boys stuff a go.

I Love it BecauseThe Next website is great to look at and the shipping was a breeze!  But most importantly, I spent ages poring over my options since there were so many great looking items to choose from. Of course, the process was made even more lengthy by my forays into the womens’ section!

After I chose my items (the raincoat pictured above and a set of hat, gloves and scarf) I was pleasantly surprised by just how quickly everything arrived.  I’m used to waiting weeks for products to arrive from overseas or even from the US so it was awesome to come home only about a week after to my Next package!

Since H is larger than the average 2 year old, I chose a size 3-4 and the jacket ended up fitting perfectly.  He is the height and weight of about a 3 year old.  I loved the quality of all the items but especially the jacket – perfect for Fall since it has a soft cotton liner with a waterproof shell.  Roomy enough for a hoodie underneath and autumn layers.

The hat seems to fit well too, but as you’ll notice, he didnt keep it on long enough to snap a pic! Will have to see when the cooler temps arrive if he will keep it on his noggin.

But I Wish It Had – I was slightly frustrated by the ease of use of the website.  I found navigating a bit annoying as once you click on a category (e.g. Young Boys) you were taken to a lookbook type page even if you wanted to stay on the category dropdown menu.  It took a bit of getting used to before I was able to comfortably browse the site.

So , reco or no? – A resounding YES to try out this website and get your brit goodies from Next!  Not only are you getting your hot little hands on goodies that you can’t find locally, you can expect excellent customer service and a large range of products.  There are so many options, colours, sizes that I felt I was browing an online department store – one stop shopping for the whole family!

As you can see, H did not want to take his jacket off…He ended up wearing it the whole day at daycare apparently!

Rent Frock Repeat: Review & Discount Code!

A few weeks ago I posted an interview featuring Canadian company, Rent Frock Repeat, that allows women to ‘release their inner runway’ by renting high-end designer dresses for special occasions.  For a wedding this past weekend, I had a chance to rent a fabulous frock and try this service out.

This was the fun and flirty jacquard Tibi navy/bronze dress I rented.  The courier arrived exactly when they said they would and I excitedly ripped open my package to try on my frock.  One amazing aspect of the website is that they allow you to rent 2 of the same dress in two different sizes (second dress is free) so that you can ensure you get the correct size.  Unfortunately for me – the sizing just didn’t work out despite the two dresses I had!  The measurements on the website were correct – it was actually a fluke that I had been losing some extra poundage courtesy of running around after H all day/night.  Combine that with a strapless design and you have the dreaded scenario of constantly pulling up your dress all night!

I got the best possible customer service when I spoke to Lisa – she rushed over a variety of dresses for me that same evening so that I would definitely be able to find something.  I really felt the owners care about each and every customer and want to see them happy in a dress that flatters them, fits well and makes them sparkle!

Brand: Rent Frock Repeat

MSRP:  Varies depending on dress

Key Features:

– Choose from top designer dresses to rent for either a 4 or 8 day period

– Professional dry-cleaning (Creeds), courier service and return paid postage included

– Dress inventory updated often (at least every season)

I Love It Because:  Aside from the most excellent customer service I’ve received in forever, I truly found the entire RFR experience to be easy, quick, convenient but mostly – FUN!  ‘Shopping’ the frocks online was awesome and made it very easy to figure out what I was looking for since they use models of different shapes and sizes.  Another great thing I loved was that each dress was styled in a variety of ways so that you could get ideas for how you would wear your dress based on accessories you already own.  Included was this super cute Thank You note along with a care package with some useful Night Out treats:

Also handy was the above checklist which let you know that your dress had been inspected and how to care for it.  The dress that I did end up going with was an absolute hit!  A blush pink Peter Soronen (who dresses none other than Michelle Obama BTW 😉 it was a sexy, short and sassy number that normally would not have been on my radar at all.  However, the beauty of this website is that you can feel confident trying out something you perhaps wouldn’t be drawn to since the whole element of ‘dress up’ has been taken up a notch.  It surely helps that this dress which regularly retails for $1695, rents out for $250 – you can feel like a superstar for a night even if you’re on a much smaller budget.  Hubby managed to snap a photo right before we headed out…(of course, H was having his first epic meltdown in forever, the cab had arrived, I couldn’t find my clutch and something was burning in the oven…no joke!):

But I Wish It Had:  As far as the service, ease of the website and selection and quality of dresses available I would have to say RFR is lacking in nothing!  However, my one wish is that they invest in some edgier, more fashion forward pieces.  I was able to find plenty to choose from for a fun night out as ‘Glam Me’ ‘Sexy Me’ and ‘Girly Me’  but if I were to use this service more often (and with weddings stacking up quickly already for 2012 it would make sense!) I would love to have some dresses that reflect my own personal style a bit more.  Also, having a tiered membership with added extra benefits or bonus treats where you could stack up Free rentals after renting 5, 10 or 20 dresses or some similar feature would be a great incentive!

So, Reco or No?  YES all the way.  I was pleasantly surprised by how vehemently I was recommending RFR to everyone who complimented me on the dress that night!  Being an avid dress shopper and owning gorgeous frocks of my own I really wasn’t sure how I would feel about having to send back the dress I rented.  Or even renting a garment that somebody else has worn already for that matter.  But from the crisp, clean and (super important to my sensitive nose) scent-free dresses that were couriered to me to the tons of compliments I got for wearing something I perhaps wouldn’t buy….can’t really say anything but YES!! I guess flattery DOES get you somewhere 😉  For this Holiday season why reuse the same ole LBD when you can dazzle and shine in something new and gorgeous instead?

DISCOUNT TIME! Wanna try it for yourself?  If you haven’t already taken advantage, Rent Frock Repeat is offering readers 15% off their first rental until Nov 30th use STYLNMOM.  You can reserve a dress for an event up to 4 months down the line using this code.

Happy Dress Renting!ax

Mabel’s Labels: Review & Giveaway!

With the kiddies back to school and daycare, how much time does it take before your LO comes home sans the uber-cute hoodie you just got him/her?!  Losing, misplacing and having other kids take by mistake can all be avoided with Mabel’s Labels.

This group of moms became frustrated with their kids constantly losing their stuff.  They developed Mabels Labels after doing a ton of research and testing to ensure they had simply the best labels out there.

The great thing about these labels is that they are customizable so you can choose colours, symbols and designs to match your kid’s personality and gear.  We went with red/grey/skulls for H.

Brand: Mabel’s Labels

MSRP:  varies depending on set you choose

Key Features:

– Uv resistant

– dishwasher, microwave, laundry safe

– 100 % satisfaction guarantee

Shoe Labels applied inside footwear

I Love It Because:  I’m a sucker for organizational tools and these are perfect – discreet enough so that you’re kid isn’t advertising his/her name out there for the world to see but clear enough that you won’t be mixing up jackets at the coat pegs!

The fact that all labels are fade/dishwasher/microwave/laundry resistant is the amazing.  All labels I used were tested in the above household helpers and all came out looking as new as when they were thrown in!  The labels also arrived within a day or so of placing my order which was simply fabulous.

But I Wish It Had:  There’s not much to complain about here but the one thing I did find is that the labels are a bit finicky to apply when you need to be careful not to get air bubbles trapped inside on the Tag Mates and since they are quite teeny.

So, Reco or No?  Yes I would highly reco these labels!  Because they come in such a wide variety of sets and packs they are actually a perfect personalized gift for any upcoming kids parties you have to go to!  They are a great combo of being fun for kids (since they can design their own labels) and practical for parents.

Purdy’s Chocolates: Review & Giveaway!

When I was given the opportunity from my friends at Purdy’s to review some chocolates I had to really think about it hard…Just kidding!  I’m a lover of all foods, sweets and savouries but I do have a special place in my heart (ahem…tummy) for chocolate.

Things that make you go MMMM

Purdy’s chocolates are all crafted with care in the Purdy’s Chocolate Factory Kitchen which is located in Canada’s own Vancouver, BC!  So take that, Belgium! Not all premium chocs need arrive from Europe 🙂  I was given a ‘chocolate tasting guide’ which I actually did find handy so before beginning I managed to cram some saltines iton my eager gob so as to cleanse the palate and did so between tasting each different type of choc.

Brand: Purdy’s Chocolates – Turona, Sweet Georgia Browns, Hedgehogs and English Toffee

MSRP:  ranges

Key Features:

– Premium quality chocolates produced in Canada

– Member of the World Cocoa Foundation which supports sustainable cocoa farming

-Canadian owned and family operated business

I Love It Because:  I started off with the newest chocolate from Purdy’s, the Turona.

Lonely....I am so lonely....

As you can see…This was the sole survivor of a massive surprise attack from Hubby.  I had mentioned I was going to review the Purdy’s package but he claims he had a choco-blackout and when he arose, this was all that was left!  I got over my ire once I tasted the Turona.   The chocolate was much creamier than I expected since it looked on the surface to be some sort of hard dark chocolate that would be chewy.  Instead I was treated to a dreamy puree of almond and hazelnut wrapped in a gorgeous French pastry flake.  One word – TODIEFOR.

nom nom

Alrighty onto the next…the Sweet Georgia Browns were also delish however I have to say – they were somewhat of a letdown after tasting the Turona!  However, not to sell them short – if you enjoy nutty, caramelly, chewy goodness in a large chocolate format (I was getting full!) then these are your pick!

The good ole Hedgehogs are everything you want in a simple chocolate:  lovely subtly sweet flavour, smooth texture and bite sized morsels that are (too) easy to eat.  Devoured these in a shamefully short amount of time.

The English Toffee was not pretty to look at, to be honest!  It actually took me awhile to get around to tasting this one because I just didn’t find it visually appealing.  I mean, I didn’t even take a very nice photo of it did I? Boy was I surprised when I bit into it!  I’m not the biggest toffee lover (hate stuff sticking to my teeth) but this one was crispy-crunchy with a velvety taste and texture!  Surprisingly, the toffee bumped Hedgehog into third place for me!

But I Wish It Had:  Really, all I could ask for of Purdy’s was MORE. These chocolates are just divine and would make a perfect gift for me anybody.

So, Reco or No?  YES YES YES. Go out right now and get yourself some Purdy’s if you want to bring an insta-smile to your face (and your tastebuds!)

Cookin’ Greens: Review & Giveaway!

Veggies.  Love em or hate em – they should be a staple of your everyday diet.  A challenging part of figuring out meals is how to serve up a fresh variety of veggies in inventive ways – keeping, of course, to the StylnMommy adage of being convenient and tasty!

Brand: Cookin’ Greens

Key Features:

– Dark leafy greens, farm picked and within 6 hours – double washed, double blanched and chopped and quick frozen

– The IQF process (individually quick frozen) improves taste, texture and nutritional benefits

I Love It Because:  The concept of having super fresh veggies that are pre-washed and pre-chopped kinda sold me right from the start.  For this recipe I tried out the Designers Mix (collards, rapini, spinach, yellow beans and white onion) and simply added some chopped red peppers that I already had, melted some butter and cooked on the stove top with lemon juice, lots of garlic and salt/pepper for the reco’d 3 minutes.  We served with some sliced up medium-rare steak on top.

For some reason I don’t really cook with yellow beans that often (okay fine…at all!) but was pleasantly surprised by the sweetness.  In fact – all the veggies tasted super fresh.  I have never really been a fan of frozen foods in general but I will definitely be swerving into the frozen foods aisles more after seeing that frozen doesn’t have to mean sodium-laced and dry.  The Cookin’ Greens were yummy and lived up to their mantra of being straight from the farm – I couldn’t tell the difference between the greens and the fresh red peppers that I had picked up from the farmers market.

But I Wish It Had:  I love the idea that you can get fresh greens straight from the farm – but would really love it if they could offer up other farm-fresh goodies!

So, Reco or No?  A big YES.  If you want healthy, convenient and most importantly, tasty veggies then head for Cookin’ Greens.  They offer the Designers Mix, Athletes Mix, Spinach, Kale or Rapini and have new products available coming soon.

GIVEAWAY TIME! Wanna try it for yourself?  Cookin’ Greens is giving away some yummies for the discerning cook of the house!

Loose Button Luxe Box: Review & Giveaway!

First impressions count..this one didn't disappoint

Loose Button introduces Luxe Box.  Sounds intriguing?  Well it seems to be every beauty junkies dream.  Basically you subscribe to the service (monthly, quarterly or yearly) and Loose Button will ship you a new and exciting Luxe Box every month chock full of ‘deluxe sized’ samples of beauty products, skincare and fragrance.

I was excited to get the opportunity to give this a try.

Brand: Loose Button Luxe Box

MSRP:  $12/mth, $36/quarter, or $120/year.

Key Features:

– Deluxe brand name samples handpicked by beauty experts

– Surprise of 3-5 samples of fragrance, beauty or skincare in every chic box

Nice packaging and personalized notecard with product info

I Love It Because:  I am a sucker for getting anything in the mail and what could be better after a hard day then receiving a gorgeous box full of luxury goodies?  It’s a nice concept for those who don’t necessarily have the time to go out and peruse the shops all the time but who like to keep in touch with new and fresh products (Ahem: Calling all stylinmommies!).  This particular box for August included the following:  Kaia Bamboo Facial Cleansing Cloth, City Lips Lip Plumping Treatment, Proclaim Cocoa Butter hand/body lotion, Calvin Klein Forbidden Euphoria Fragrance.  There were also a set of cute handmade earrings by Sheyna included in the mix.

There was a nice variety in the range of products – they covered skincare, fragrance and beauty.  The hand cream was by a brand I had never heard of so it was good to get exposure to something new and I actually did like the mild scent and texture of the cream.  The facial wipes are great for travelling and got all my black eyeliner/mascara off with no problem.  I’ve tried many lip plumpers in my day and unfortunately the City Lips one doesn’t quite stack up but as a gloss alone it works just fine.

But I Wish It Had:  To tell you the truth I was disappointed in the size of a few of the samples.  The fragrance and lip gloss were miniscule – let’s just say Angelina Jolie would be done with the gloss in one or two fell swoops!  The hand lotion was full sized but again, this is from a brand I’ve never heard of before.  I would actually pay a bit more if I was sure I would be getting higher quality brands included.  It seemed a bit odd to include the earrings and almost felt like an afterthought to fill the box up.

So, Reco or No?  I love the concept behind the Luxe Box but I’m not sure if I would sign up for a quarterly or annual membership just yet.   The size of the samples was disappointing so I’d have to reco trying a couple of months before committing to anything more.  I was also hoping for more premiere brands to be included in my box.  But for the price you are definitely getting a nice surprise in the mail – I’d say try it out if you are a beauty aficionado who likes to sample new products with no need to worry about committing.  If you’re not so much into the idea it actually makes for a super cute gift idea for that person in your life who can’t live without the latest creams/sheens/glosses.  After all, one month is the price of a coupla lattes!

Life Choices: Review & Giveaway!

Let’s face it – whether you’re a stay at home or working parent, “What’s for dinner?” can be such a loaded question.  There are the days where I manage to eke out a home cooked meal from scratch for hubby and I with Baby H taking long and leisurely naps…then there are the other 99% of the days 🙂

quick, easy, yummy - best of all healthy!

Life Choices Natural Foods is a health food company based out of Toronto with the mandate of “Making the Right Choices Easy”.  They basically provide kid-friendly, healthy alternatives to the foods that families want to eat – mac & cheese, pizzas, nuggets, meatballs and pierogies.  When I was given the chance to sample some of these natural convenience foods I was excited but actually a bit skeptical because, really – how good can frozen food taste? And how healthy can it actually be?

I sampled the chicken nuggets and chicken strips since after being around a range of boys aged 3-10 M and I have become quite the chicken nugget connoisseurs.

Brand: Life Choices Natural Foods – Chicken nuggets and strips

MSRP:  $10.99 each

Key Features:

– Premium quality chicken, vegetable-grain fed raised without antibiotics or animal byproducts

– Custome multigrain coating includes flax, whole grain and oats providing sources of Omega 3 and fibre

I Love It Because:  First of all, this meal was a breeze to throw together.  Anything oven-cooked is a mom’s best friend and this was no exception.  The chicken cooked in the oven for 18 minutes at 400 and I had thrown in some chopped taters/onions with some salt/pepper/garlic powder/paprika beforehand.  Added a salad and voila – dinner was served.

The chicken wasn’t as browned as I expected it to be.  It was, however, very moist!  I figured with the crusty coating that it looked a bit dry but was pleasantly surprised.  The coating was tasty but didn’t seem to be over-flavoured which is something I hate.  M enjoyed his and we both concurred the nuggets for some reason were tastier than the strips (though you would think they would be similar?!)

But I Wish It Had:  …and I’m stuck! Can’t really think of anything these bad boys are missing.

So, Reco or No?  Definitely gonna have to give these the thumbs up.  For a healthy and tasty QUICK meal for your family, you’ll want to run out to your local Pusateris (or one of these other stores) and grab yourself some of these.  I am actually very excited to try the pizzas which my store didn’t have on hand at the time I was there.  You can’t really go wrong here and you can feel good that even though you’re not crafting a meal from scratch – you’re still serving your fam something wholesome and yummy!

GIVEAWAY TIME! Wanna try it for yourself?  Life Choices Natural Foods is giving away an awesome insulated lunch tote chock FULL of their  yummy healthy products!  To enter simply leave a comment at the bottom of this post letting me know that you have done the following (#1 is your mandatory entry for this contest, the rest are extra entries):  Entries accepted until Wed August 31st 2011.

Tarte for True Blood

Pretty case and instruction booklet

inside the instruction booklet

oooh colouring time!

slide out drawer with primer, eyeliner & mascara

Brand:  Tarte Cosmetics

MSRP: $68 CDN (retail value of $331 USD if sold separately)

Key Features: 17 full sized eyeshadows, 1 eyeshadow primer, 1 black mascara, 1 black gel eyeliner

before makeup and before coffee...deadly combo

ah....that's much better! Coffee in hand & face on

I Love It Because:  Well first of all, I’m a makeup junkie!  Especially eye makeup.  Give me a good dark eyeliner/shadow anyday and I’m good to go.  Which is a good thing because since becoming a mom, the dark shadow goes well with the dark circles under my eyes 🙂  I’ve tried a bajillion different brands of eyeshadow and since trying Tarte a few years ago I’ve become an avid fan of their shadows.  The texture is nice and velvety with lots of deep pigmentation so you don’t have to use a ton of the stuff.

The application was terrific as always and the handy instruction booklet was actually put to use!  I decided to try the Not Your Average Waitress for an everyday look with a bit of ‘pow’.  It took less than 5 minutes which I love since I’m pressed for time these days.

The eyeliner went on smoothly and felt nice and cool to the skin.  I didn’t have a problem with tearing up under the eye but this could be because I’m used to using eyeliner.

Each and every colour will be used – unlike many other palettes where they throw in a couple of juicy colours and then you have a bunch of duds!

But I Wish It Had:  Would have been lovely if it came with some brushes and one or two lip colours or a gloss.  The mascara wasn’t the greatest but will do in a pinch if you don’t have anything else around.

So, Reco or No? :  Well, I know I’ve been on a bit of a ‘yes’ kick lately but I’m not breaking that trend here because this palette is simply awesome.  If you are into dark and dramatic colours even for your everyday look then I would strongly reco hitting up your closest Sephora and snagging one of these bad boys up.  I do enjoy that it is a very portable size for travelling too. Vamp it up ladies!
